EUA Doctoral Week: Global Perspectives, Funding of Doctoral Education and Quality Assurance (23-27 September 2012)
May 24, 2012
EUA is pleased to announce that it will organise “Doctoral Week” at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, from 23 to 27 September 2012. The week will be based around three separate but connected events that will provide different higher education and research stakeholders with an opportunity to engage with three highly relevant issues for doctoral education: global trends, funding and quality assurance.
Participants can take part in one or more of the events (outlined below) which have been designed to enable stakeholders to share experiences and deepen their understanding of these different aspects of doctoral education.
-
The first event will be the Final Conference (23-25 September) of the
CODOC project that will present the report that summarises the results of this Erasmus Mundus-funded project and explains trends in doctoral education in East Asia, Latin America, Southern Africa and Europe. Speakers and participants from across the world will examine the project's findings and discuss the trends in doctoral education (participation is open to all and there is no registration fee for this event – however, please note numbers will be limited).
-
The EUA Council for Doctoral Education Annual Meeting (25-26 September), the second event of Doctoral Week, will focus on the issue of funding doctoral education. It will present and critically examine different models of investment in doctoral education, illustrate the interplay between excellence and capacity building, and explore the internal costing of doctoral schools and programmes. The meeting will aim to provide a platform for dialogue between universities, funding organisations and other stakeholders (participation in this event is open to all, and EUA-CDE members will benefit from a reduced registration fee). Please also note that the
call for presentations for the Annual Meeting is still open until 15 June 2012.
-
The final event of Doctoral Week will be the Accountable Research Environments for Doctoral Education (ARDE) Workshop (26-27 September). This is the final event in an EUA-coordinated
project on quality management in doctoral education, supported by the European Commission's Lifelong Learning Programme. The workshop will be an opportunity to engage in discussions on this topic, share good practices and to formulate clear recommendations on how to ensure transparency and accountability in doctoral schools and programmes (participation is open to all but there will be a registration fee).
EUA Doctoral Week is open to all stakeholders concerned with doctoral education, such as Vice-Rectors, heads of doctoral schools, funding organisations and political actors. The specific events will also be of interest to heads of international offices, organisations involved in development activities, quality managers, directors of finance and quality assurance agencies.
